I don't get OTP that often, but I will make the effort for really good food... Five40 is a case in point.
Kennesaw friends tipped me off to this new restaurant and, although I'm frequently disappointed by tapas, the buzz was so good that I made the trip.
- The interior is simple, but elegantly appointed
- The service is very good
- The presentation is quite nice
- The menu is thoughtful, creative, and has a good balance to it
But I'm all about the actual food, so here's the run down!
Mac and Cheese - with truffle oil and gruyere
I will order Mac and Cheese every time I see it on a menu. Typically, I'm a big fan of of the old fashioned kind because most attempts to modernize the dish fail miserably. Five40 does a great job with their version, though... plus, I'm a sucker for gruyere.
Thanksgiving Pot Stickers
That's right. An Asian pot sticker with turkey and dressing and a cranberry drizzle (see previous comment about creative menu). Elegant comfort food.
Brussel Sprouts and Apples
So many chefs in the metro area seem to abuse the poor brussel sprout. This is a delicious vegetable if you just treat it simply. Five40 seems to understand this, resulting in the best brussel sprout I've had since Dynamic Dish closed! I believe the apples were Granny Smith (nice pairing) and spicy pistachios did a great job rounding out the flavor profile. Very, very good!
Risotto of the Day - Mushroom (crimini, I think)
Wow.
Just wow.
Deep, robust, and complex flavor profile that actually gave me chill bumps. I'm getting chill bumps now just writing about it. I don't know what else to say, but that this is a must try dish that warrants a 5-star rating by itself.
SUMMARY
Five40 is extraordinarily good. I will be back and will remember to bring more people so we can do a better job exploring the menu... there's only so much one person can do at a time :) |
